Why do i need a resignation letter?

What is the real purpose of a resignation letter? Is it just a formal way of resigning or is it to keep records of it? I COULD just tell my boss face to face exactly, could i not?

  1. It covers your company so you don't come back and sue them for wrongful dismissal. It also helps you for future employment to show that you resigned, you were not fired (which looks much worse on your cv).
  2. They need something in writing to get the process started in HR. That is what I have been told.
  3. Well its always good to remain professional. You had to give a resume when you were hired right? Well a resignation letter..is in a sense of being professional..and yes to keep record as well. Face to face is not professional in the business aspect of it.
  4. it's professional,it means leaving on good terms. when a prospective employer calls for a reference, your former boss will have positive things to say about your leaving.
  5. You don't, you could just stop showing up.
  6. No, the want it for their records & it will help you for the rest of your career so they can go back & show you left on good terms...You shouldn't make it nasty..just think of yourself years from now & your love is much better than now & you have your dream job but need a reference. They go in the records & pull out this letter.
  7. It's just a courteous way of thanking your employer for the work experience... It will also lead to better references for you...
  8. A resignation letter a way for you to leave on a good note. And a way for them to keep that note. Its almost like a safety net, whereas it helps your chances of getting a job back with the same company if you needed it. It also helps the company to say something good about you if ever you use them as a reference. Yes you could say it to your boss's face but you should still give him a letter of resignation after you do that.
