How do you quit a job/write a resignation letter?

I've only had 2 jobs to quit and on both occasions I got lucky that the situation led up to it - but if you dont ever run into your 'boss' on a daily basis how do you let them know you're leaving? I've heard of people writing resignation letters - what do you write in them? I'd be happy to have any of your anecdotal experiences......

  1. There are a number of templates on MS online http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/templates/results.aspx?qu=resignation+letter&av=TPL000
  2. Write a resignation letter. Try one of the templates at www.i-resign.com as these are usually the ones that I have used. I've also quit a lot of jobs due to moves and stuff and if possible talk to your boss first, even if you have to do it over the phone, because it's better for them to hear it direct in case you have to work out a notice period or anything. Hope it goes well and remember to try not to burn bridges as you leave in case you have to go back or in case you need a reference.
  3. Thank them for the opportunity and the experience gained. Then just tell them nicely, such as: "Although I have really enjoyed my time here, I have found another opportunity and have decided to take it." You don't need to apologize. Just let them know that you will be putting in your two weeks and that your employment will end after that.
  4. Dear (boss name), Effective Monday, May 7, 2007, I am giving you my two weeks notice and I am resigning my position as (your job title). I have gained a lot of experience that I will take with me on my new venture. It has been a pleasure working for this organization. Blah, Blah, Blah.
  5. It depends on your company policy. What your boss states when he/she hires you. On normal basis, during probation period, you must give one week notice. Once you are confirmed, you have to give one month notice. Sometimes, the boss can let you go early if you do not have much things to hand over or you have to clear leave. In the letter, all you need to write is, I will like to tender my resignation on (date) with immediate letter. Resignation is a manner towards your boss of letting them know you want to leave. The rest is up to you and your boss to set things out. Whether does your boss want to ask you to stay or ask for reason or let you know what you have to do before you leave if your boss agree to the resignation. For me, all I did is tender my resignation. Hand over the projects I have in hand. off I go within one week. The rest is clearing my leave and I still get my pay.
