Resignation Pro

Does this sound good for a resignation letter?

I am extremely worried about my future resumes being affected by any termination. How does this sound? I appologize for the inconvenience this may cause, but I must put in my two weeks resignation. I hope to be finished with all projects I can before that time, and to have trained at least one person in how to set up the macros and implement the program to better assist this department. It has been a pleasure working with you, (1st name), (2nd name) and (3rd name) and I will miss working for (company name), but I must start preparing for my future. I will do everything within my power to have as little negative or attentive impact as possible in the transition between now and my last day. Aside from changing my decision to resign, please let me know if there is anything I can do to help the group before then. The apologetic tone is because they are going to be pissed. I wrote a program and increased productivity by more than triple. But my job is data entry and techincal support. No body knows how to use the program, even though I have been begging to train someone else before I left because the company owns the rights to it, seeing as I wrote it on company time (which pisses me off). Oh, and I highly doubt my boss will write me a positive letter of recommendation, but i will request one. My department will need more people if I leave or hire someone who is educated in programming to help work with my program and the companies programs, which they will most likely expect more money than I did. Granted, this company is HUGE, one of the 3 biggest companies in the world. They could afford it, but its a transportation company, so they are hit hard by the recession.

  1. Very nice. to the point and polite.
  2. While it certainly is polite, I would refrain from the apologetic tone. It sounds as if you are sincerely sad to go, so perhaps you might say that. Oh and do mention your tenure. Something like "In my ten years with Blank Corp, I have learned from the best. I will miss you all." Something like that.
  3. May 15, 2009 Dear [boss's name]: The purpose of this letter is to give my two weeks' notice and resign from my position. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. My goal is to be finished with all outstanding projects by that time and to have trained at least one person to set up the macros and implement the program so the department will continue to run smoothly. It has been a pleasure working with you, x, y and z and I will miss working for ABC Company. I feel my future goals depend on me moving on at this time. I would like to talk about whether you feel comfortable writing me a positive letter of recommendation. Please let me know what else I can do to make the transition a smooth one between now and Friday, May 29. Sincerely, Your Name
  4. Walmart, Exxon Moblie, Royal Dutch Shell, BP and Toyota Motor and the largest companies in the world according to Forbes 500. I seriously doubt any one of those companies has only one data entry person that knows how to use whatever program they are running. I seriously doubt that any of those companies' executives care enough about someone in data entry and tech support to be pissed if they left.
  5. You are not really saying why you are leaving. They do deserve an explanation. All items created on company time as part of your work does belong to the company. (everywhere) The letter of recommendation is very important. Ask for it by the end of the week and if they refuse, why do you owe them the extra week notice? Even if they are upset that you are leaving, the letter of recommendation should be based on your work and not on the fact that you are leaving. Always be pleasant and polite even if they are upset with you. Good luck, and I hope you find a job you will be happier with.
  6. You want to keep this from being personal. It is business and only business. KEEP IT professional. Do not apologize, even if you feel you need to. You worked for them, they paid you to do what you did. The end. Do not be guilted into some emotional tornado created to make you feel like you MUST stay there. MAKE A COPY OF THIS LETTER FOR YOUR RECORDS Make it short and sweet. Only give the required details... --------------------REQUIRED DETAILS---------------------- *NOTICE You are putting in your two weeks notice. (Include the date the notice begins and ends so there is NO confusion. They may try to cloud the dates to make you stay longer. Don't let them have even one inch.) *BE PLEASANT Be pleasant, but do not apologize. There is nothing to apologize for when you are seeking to better yourself. They are professionals as well and will understand this concept. *REMINDER Remind them of your contribution to the company. You were a member of the team and did a lot to help them out. There is no shame in leaving, sometimes it happens. That is life. *PROVISION FOR SMOOTH TRANSITION Offer to train your replacement. If they choose not to take you up on the offer, fine, that is on them. *RECOMMENDATION Ask for a positive recommendation... in writing...nicely. *MISCELLANEOUS Do not include anyone's name in the letter except your immediate supervisor. NO UNNECESSARY comments allowed. Make it quick and painless... like a form letter. KEEP it professional. Here is an example of a resignation letter that I wrote for you: LETTER OF RESIGNATION---> (Your supervisor's name here), At this time, I would like to announce to you my intention of seeking alternate employment. Although my employment here has been mutually beneficial for both the company and myself, I feel at this time that I should seek opportunities in which I will be able to advance my career. In light of the unique circumstances with the current position that I hold, I do wish to give two weeks notice to allow time to find a replacement. In an effort to make the transition as smooth as possible, I would welcome the opportunity to assist in training my replacement before the following two weeks commence. I am grateful for the opportunity and experience that I have aquired here. Thank you for allowing me to be apart of this team. It was a positive experience, and I consider myself lucky to have been here. I am sure that the next person to fill my position will feel the same. I look forward to the day when our professional paths will once again cross. I would sincerely appreciate a letter of recommendation for future employment to show what a positive experience this has been. Please consider the two weeks notice to start on Monday, May 18, 2009. The last day of my employment with the company will be on Friday, May 29, 2009. Thank you, (Your name)
