Quitting before date on Resignation Letter? Hi, All! I have a unique situation at work and am wondering if I am legally liable to continue working there. On May 28th I turned in a resignation letter indicating my expected end date is the end of August, when my position was anticipated on being filled. I did however state that employment might end sooner if the position is filled or if pregnancy related health issues prevent me from working. I am now wanting to quit in 2 weeks. Depending on how much worse the situation gets, there may not be any notice involved. Because of the resignation letter, are there any legal repercussions they can take against me? Or am I free to quit at will? (I am in Colorado). Thanks for the help!
I'm Bored...Best Resignation Letter Ever Written...haha? Following is a supposed letter of resignation from an employee at a computer company, to her boss, who apparently resigned very soon afterwards! It's Funny, but a bit harsh....... Dear Mr. Smith, As a graduate of an institution of higher education, I have a few very basic expectations. Chief among these is that my direct superiors have an intellect that ranges above the common ground squirrel. After your consistent and annoying harassment of my co-workers and me during the commission of our duties, I can only surmise that you are one of the few true genetic wastes of our time. Asking me, a network administrator, to explain every little nuance of everything I do each time you happen to stroll into my office is not only a waste of time, but also a waste of precious oxygen. I was hired because I know how to network computer systems, and you were apparently hired to provide amusement to myself and other employees, who watch you vainly attempt to understand the concept of "cut and paste" for the hundredth time. You will never understand computers. Something as incredibly simple as binary still gives you too many options. You will also never understand why people hate you, but I am going to try and explain it to you, even though I am sure this will be just as effective as telling you what an IP is. Your shiny new iMac has more personality than you ever will. You walk around the building all day, shiftlessly looking for fault in others. You have a sharp dressed useless look about you that may have worked for your interview, but now that you actually have responsibility, you pawn it off on overworked staff, hoping their talent will cover for your glaring ineptitude. In a world of managerial evolution, you are the blue-green algae that everyone else eats and laughs at. Managers like you are a sad proof of the Dilbert principle. Since this situation is unlikely to change without you getting a full frontal lobotomy reversal, I am forced to tender my resignation, however I have a few parting thoughts. 1. When someone calls you in reference to employment, it is illegal for you to give me a bad recommendation. The most you can say to hurt me is "I prefer not to comment." I will have friends randomly call you over the next couple of years to keep you honest, because I know you would be unable to do it on your own. 2. I have all the passwords to every account on the system, and I know every password you have used for the last five years. If you decide to get cute, I am going to publish your "favorites list", which I conveniently saved when you made me "back up" your useless files. I do believe that terms like "Lolita" are not usually viewed favorably by the administration. 3. When you borrowed the digital camera to "take pictures of your Mother's birthday," you neglected to mention that you were going to take pictures of yourself in the mirror nude. Then you forgot to erase them like the techno-moron you really are. Suffice it to say I have never seen such odd acts with a sauce bottle, but I assure you that those have been copied and kept in safe places pending the authoring of a glowing letter of recommendation. (Try to use a spell check please; I hate having to correct your mistakes.) Thank you for your time, and I expect the letter of recommendation on my desk by 8:00 am tomorrow. One word of this to anybody, and all of your little twisted repugnant obsessions will be open to the public. Never f*** with your systems administrator. Why? Because they know what you do with all that free time! Wishing you a grand and glorious day, Cecelia **haha, I know that's really long, I'm just bored at work...looking up stuff that's not web blocked from me yet..tehehe, have a fantastic day guys...** Good evening Mr. Kelso, always a pleasure... aww thanks geleebeans, you're alright in my books...I don't care what all those other people say about you ;o) Ohhhhhhhhh Britart, so much writing what a waste, it didn't do it for me haha, I kiiid I kiiid...jokey joke :o)

Is this a good resignation letter? April 26th, 2010 Mr. xxxxxx xxxxxx Address Dear Mr. xxxxxx, Please accept this letter as notice of my resignation. As per my employment contract, I am giving one month’s notice and will be leaving on Thursday May 27th, 2010. While I have been satisfied working in the team at Amack Solar, I have decided to make this move as I will be traveling to another country where I have been offered a job at another company. I have enjoyed working with you and appreciate the opportunities I have been given here during my tenure. I will do whatever I can to make an efficient handover of my duties. Please feel free to get in touch should you require information after I have left. Yours sincerely, My name
I gave a one week resignation notice from work...? ...and my boss accepted it. 3 days before my last day, she told my colleague to talk to me and ordered me to work for another 2 weeks because I am suppose to give a 1 month notice. Failure to do so will cause a deduction from salary. So even though I’ve worked for one month, I’ll paid half. Either way, I’ll be working 2 weeks for free! I am just bummed that my boss doesn’t have the decency to talk to me face-to-face or earlier when I gave the resignation letter to her. But I felt like I’m being place in a losing situation. My 3 months probation is over and they did not give any confirmation letter to me after my probation. And my colleague told me, I’ve to assume I’m accepted. Another thing, I’m in a process of being evaluated for a position in an aviation company. There will be test and 2 panel interviews. Either way, I have to ask for frequent leaves from work. And that wouldn’t look so good either. Please advise!
Unused accrued vacation time - Resignation? I have recently quit my job and need to know whether I should fight for my unused accrued vacation time or let it go. The problem is my company has a "use it or loose it" policy when it comes to vacation time. You have to use all your vacation each year. I gave my resignation letter on Dec. 21, 2008 my last day of employment was Jan 2nd. I tried to fight this over and over with HR - that I should receive my unused vacation time, but they said it is a new year and I was supposed to have used it all. If I set my last day to be Dec 31, 2008 I would have received my all my unused vacation time which is seven days. ( about $1300 ) My argument to them was that I decided when my last day was so I suggested to them to only give me 5 days paid vacation time since they had already paid me for two days in 2009. They didn't budge. I did some research and this is what I found. Should I take them to Small claims court? Or are they correct? Is it worth the chance? Electronic Data Systems Corp. v. Attorney General, 440 Mass. 1020, 798 N.E.2d 273 (2003). http://www.nelfonline.org/cases/EDS%20v%20Attorney%20General.htm This case raises the issue whether the Massachusetts Payment of Wages Act, G.L. c. 149, §148 (“Wage Act”), requires an employer to pay employees for unused vacation time upon termination, even when the employer’s written vacation policy expressly disclaims any such payments. The Superior Court held that the employee’s unused vacation time constitutes “wages” earned under the Wage Act, notwithstanding the employer’s published policy to the contrary. In its amicus brief representing the Associated Industries of Massachusetts and the Retailers Association of Massachusetts, NELF argues that the lower court decision is inconsistent with the plain language of the Wage Act, which posits the employment agreement as the controlling authority on the subject of vacation benefits. The Wage Act merely enforces an employer’s contractual obligation to pay an employee’s regular compensation during an authorized vacation leave. Requiring an employer to pay for unused vacation time when the employment agreement disavows any such payments would violate the Wage Act and impose an unpredictable financial burden on the employer that would be contrary to the bargain between the parties. Moreover, courts from many other jurisdictions applying similar state wage laws have reached the same conclusion: a terminated employee has no right to receive payment for unused vacation unless the employment agreement so provides. NELF also argues that there are compelling policy reasons to allow an employer to treat unused vacation time differently from used vacation time. A paid vacation allows the employee to rest and recuperate and provides the employer with the benefit of a rested employee. Requiring the employer to buy back unused vacation time serves no such mutually beneficial purposes, because the employer receives no consideration for financing a former employee’s free time. An employer is also better able to manage the predictable cost of employees’ scheduled vacations than the unpredictable cost of paying employees for unused vacation time. Oral argument is scheduled before the Supreme Judicial Court in October, 2003.

Dear Mr. K: Please accept this letter as formal notification that I am leaving my position as Front Desk Manager with La Quinta Inn at the end of my shift on October 31st 2007. Free legal representation to leave the Mormon church? I sent in a letter of resignation to have my name removed in October 2007. It was ignored, but I settled for being on the "do not contact list". They even broke that promise, so I sent in another letter of resignation threatening to seek legal recourse if they did not remove my name from their records. Worst case, I may just represent myself, but I am only a student. Is there any out there who would represent a case like this free of charge? There have been lawsuits that forced the church to do this- but someone will definitely hear the case. I can't just 'stop obsessing' because they keep harassing me and the only way is to get my name off the records.
Should I put in my letter of resignation? Details inside.? I am taking 18 credhit hours in school and I am working 40 hours a week. I can't handle the load. I recently reapplied to my old job and I am only going to work on weekends. My coworkers don't want me to leave, but my GPA is a 2.4 and I need to get it up. I am not going to school for free. I can't even get an internship in my major with that GPA.
Resign, notice & salary (lawyer outthere, help)? so there are some employee that got a 1 year contract and within that year, if you want to resign you'll need to give 3 month notice & (and) 3 month salary so when they want to quit, after they throw the resignation letter, they'll work for free for 3 month after their notice, if they want to quit right after, they'll need to pay for 6 month their position is one of the lowest (not manager or something) in the contract eventhough the company said "if the need you to come back to work, you have to come back" yeah they use it very efficiently forced them to work for 12 hours a day, sometimes ask them to come on sunday without giving them a day leave, so its about 55-60 hours of work a week. without overtime pay so is there anything that's covered in the law?
Why do Democrats think they are above the law? "Detroit City Council President Pro Tem Monica Conyers pleaded guilty this morning to conspiring to commit bribery and is free on personal bond." "No resignation letter has been submitted by Conyers to Detroit City Council as of this morning, according to the council clerk’s office, Council President Ken Cockrel Jr.’s office, and council’s legal office. " http://www.freep.com/article/20090626/NEWS01/90626024/1001/NEWS/Conyers+pleads+guilty+to+conspiracy So let me understand this, the wife of powerful Democratic congressman U.S. Rep. John Conyers, pleads guilty but wants to keep her job. Classic Democrat for you, just like Gov Blabbovich in Chicago on his bribes, and the liberals whine about Gov. Mark Sanford and his affair.
Getting out of an apartment lease......? Ok I need to know if there are any quirks to getting out of an apartment lease besides causing yourself to be evicted (which is not an option for me) and paying rent till the lease is up! The place I was living at is a total dump (still on the lease there)! I lived there for a short period of time... It is overpriced, ghetto, I had bugs, we had a fire in the underground parking garage, issues with the hot water heater, drug dealers, etc! Its been a total mess! My bf and I were both living there and now we both stay at my moms and he pays rent there still because we cant get out of the lease! The apartment managers are crooks... They will keep your deposit no matter what and try to claim that they lost your resignation letter! Ive tried contacting a lawyer for a free consultation and they told me Im more or less stuck! I just dont want to accept that as my only option since that place is a scam and a sh*thole! So anyone have an words of wisdom for my situation?
What will happen to my employment discrimination case if I quit my current job? Here's my situation: I filed a complaint to EEOC 3 weeks ago. I am still employed in my current job (the subject of my complaint) but right now I am on a disability as per my doctor’s medical report due to mental anxiety and emotional distress i suffered due to a hostile work environment due to harassment, discrimination and retaliation in my workplace in Buffalo, NY. Can i submit my resignation letter while I am still on disability because I feel it is impossible to go back to work because of the hostile work environment and I feel they (management and co-workers) will further make retaliation because I made a complaint to EEOC. I am right now on a protected leave as per medical report submitted by my doctor (since March 22, 2010 to present) which is called the FMLA and its good for 12 weeks and runs out on June 20 but I lost wages and waiting for my work comp to be approved. I don’t want to finish my disability (FMLA leave) until June 20 so I want to quit and submit my resignation before June 20 telling my employer I am not coming back. What is the law for an employee who is on disability due to mental anxiety and I want to go back to work on full time but Not in my present employer. Will it affect my file records and will my employer put red flags on my file in case I submit my resignation letter while I am still on protected leave which is FMLA? Because I don’t want my employer to make charges or any form of negative reports against me and I want my HR file records to be free and clear from any kind of negative reports. Actually, I already applied to another job and I was interviewed and offered a job but I cannot work on this new job unless I am officially released from my current employer. I really want to get a new job where I will be treated fairly and at peace and gain respect from co-workers, because right now I am experiencing panic attack every time I am thinking about coming back to work to my current employer. I don’t have any income right now that’s why I want to get a new job. As soon as I submit my resignation letter, let’s say on June 06, 2010 and will take effect on June 20, 2010 will that be considered also as my 2-week notice (just to comply with the employer policy on giving notice), even if I am still on disability leave? Or do you think I am really required to submit 2-week notice when in fact I am on FMLA leave? I am confused on this issue. As soon as I submit my resignation letter, by law, do I have to wait for the written response of my current employer approving my resignation letter? What if they just ignored my resignation letter and I did not received any response at all, can I proceed and accept the job offer with new employer? How will it affect my complaint filed at EEOC in case I quit? Will it make my case stronger or weaker? Or do you think after my FMLA runs out on June 20, I just go back to work and be patient to endure the hostile work environment until the final verdict comes from EEOC? Will the EEOC continue to process and make progress investigation (until the final outcome of their verdict) even if I am no longer working in my current job which is the subject of my complaint? When I try to think about it, I just don’t feel leaving my current job of 4 years just like that because of the benefits and pay they provide, and if I start a new job it will not give more pay and not much benefits because it is an entry level position and I will lost my seniority in my current job. Please, I need your help for some expert advice on what I am suppose to do based on the given situations above. Thank you.
To HR rep, I was terminated from my job, and forced to resign from my job. Advice? On Friday I had my SEPAP performance evaluation on a job I started 3 months ago. The same thing was done to me as the past 2 employees in my same position. They were also told they were being terminated in 30 days, or submit a resignation letter so the current employer reference if a potential employer calls her for a reference will be "the employee resigned." So they both submitted their resignations, not having a choice. There is no winning there. The VP of HR backs up my manager who is the Director of HR. No one has the courage to know there is a problem in HR and do anything about getting rid of the Director of HR. 1) I submitted the resignation letter since she told me I am being terminated, last day 12/23 2) I am then free to apply for other positions within the university. 3) I checked the box on the SEPAP form "I do not agree with this performance evaluation". 4) By Wednesday I need to submit my typed statement to my director which will be attached to my SEPAP performance evaluation. Instead of writing a detailed explanation on why I do not agree with her on each item and point, I am going to attach this statement to my evaluation: "I would greatly appreciate any potential employer to contact me directly so that I may address any questions that you may have regarding anything in my performance evaluation. I can be contacted at the following phone number" Tthe potential employers who have access to my performance evaluation and employee file are only other departments within the university, if they request it. External companies would not have physical access to information on my evaluation in my employee file. At least I have more of a chance of obtaining a neutral reference from her. What do you think about this? If I do that, I believe it will be better than contesting her on each point and attaching that to my performance evaluation because then if I contest her on my typed attachment on each point, I guarantee she will become extremely angry after reading it and retaliate without giving me a neutral reference, and will definitely give me a negative reference. I have received over 15 individual employee performance awards from my past employers over the last 10 years. Thank you in advance to anyone who has been in this sitatuation, or any Human Resources representative.

Should Obama be forced out of office? Alan Caruba, Candian Free Pressm writes: "As this is being written, joblessness has hit a 25 year high. The Dow is plunging and neither Obama nor Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner can open their mouths without making it go lower. There’s one sure sign of distress and distrust; few people want to join the top ranks of his administration. Thanks to the Watergate scandal, in August 1974 Sen. Barry Goldwater and a delegation of Washington politicos paid a visit to then-President Richard M. Nixon and in effect handed him a letter of resignation to sign. Nixon was gone in days. He avoided impeachment. " "So here’s my wishful thinking. At some point early in 2010 a delegation of Congress critters will to show up in the Oval Office and hand the resident lunatic a resignation letter to sign. Some plausible excuse would be made to cover his exit. No doubt it would be hastened if Obama was confronted with evidence of misdeeds from the Chicago political cesspool in which he thrived. If they don’t force his departure, the 2010 elections will likely repeat the 1994 turnover of Congress as voters of all descriptions elect any Republican candidate on the ticket. In three months Obama has accomplished what some thought was impossible. He has made us nostalgic for George W. Bush" Thus this is a three part question: Should Obama be forced from office, if so by what mechanism, and how soon? Link: http://canadafreepress.com/index.php/article/9144 Recall is not a legal option. The possibilities are the forced yet voluntary resignation as per Nixon, impeachment for "High Crimes or Misdemeanors", removal due to impairment via the 25th Amendment, and possibly disqualification since Obama arguably is ineligible by the "natural born citizen" requirement of the Constitution as either (1) his Dad was never a US citizen (2) Obama was not born in the US or (3) Obama, as an adult, renounced his US citizenship. In re Impeachment, the clearly demonstrated mental or psychological inability to perform at level necessary for the safety of all may itself be a misdemeanor. Or Obama may have engaged in crimes with any number of his Chicago associates, a number of whom are under investigation, indicted or convicted of crimes. If you consider this question interesting, please mark it so. Also the article upon which the question is based is from the "Canada Free Press", to correct my typo above. The original Constitution provided a two remedies for an incompetent or corrupt President. One was to wait until the next election. The other was Impeachment. "High crimes and misdemeanors" does not necessarily require what would be a crime -- that is well-established in law. In modern times we have newer amendments that allow the President to be removed and replaced should he get very sick, or become mentally or emotionally incompetent to hold office. Plus, we have the popular political forces short of Impeachment or the 25th -- for the President to resign. ALL OF THESE are lawful, all are Constitutional.
What is the most proper way to give your notice to an employer? I have worked at a school for almost 3 years and I am planning to give about a month's notice that I will not be working there anymore to attend a university and finish my degree. My boss is aware that I have been accepted to the University and that I attended an orientation recently. I didn't share with her that I enrolled in classes already that will conflict with my work schedule. I am dreading sitting her down and telling her I am leaving, mostly because I am afraid she already suspects it. I would rather give her a letter of resignation, but it is that improper ettiquette? Should I talk to her in person and then have a brief written statement letting her know my last day? I also want her to feel free to call on me to sub once in awhile and I am not leaving on bad terms or anything, but I just can't be responsible for running a classroom and taking a full university load, and even if I could, I just don't want to. I want to be a full time student. Any ideas? And what is more proper, face to face talk or typed resignation letter? Thanks!
Why is Obama avoiding supporting our brave soldiers, his poster boy has just resigned? U.S. Official's resignation leaves White House scrambling A poster boy for the Obama administration's plans for the increasingly-controversial war in Afghanistan resigned in protest last month and the departure has sent shock waves through the White House, which faces increasing criticism over its handling of the conflict. "I have lost understanding of and confidence in the strategic purposes of the United States' presence in Afghanistan," Matthew Hoh wrote in his four-page resignation letter from the Foreign Service. "I have doubts and reservations about our current strategy and planned future strategy, but my resignation is based no upon how we are pursuing this war, but why and to what end." http://www.capitolhillblue.com/node/20095 When is the 'great' Obama going to get off his endless campaign trail and support our great troops in Afghanistan? The gonad free, gutless Marxist in the White House is out playing basketball and golf, while our brave soldiers are fighting a war in Afghanistan, how pathetic and low can Obama go.
I’d finished my contract on February 2008. Is it possible for my employer to impose me 1 yr immigration ban? My Name is Jennifer, I am an Architect and have been on a working visa for almost 2 years with employment visa as Graphic designer under the sponsorship of a Jebel Ali Free Zone based company. Recently, I've got a job offer from a government agency and I am planning to just finish my 2 years contract with my current post which will be on February 2008. I’ve filed a resignation letter last Dec.16, 2008, Immediately, the day after my resignation, a memo from the HR was sent stating that they will put a ban on employees who resign. Immigration ban they said for 1 year. My concern now is, if I extend my stay at the company until I’d finished my contract on February 11, 2008. Is it possible for my current employer to impose a ban on me in Labor or Immigration department eventhough I have finished my contract? The date on residency stamped on my passport indicates April 2006."

Have you ever been fired from a job for something you didn't do? How did you get back on the horse? I was let go from a job years ago and I took it very personally since my personal integrity was questioned by my boss, who, in fact, was the screw up and I was her disposable little scapegoat - anyway. It kind of left a bad taste in my mouth. She, the director of a free clinic, didnt turn in a form to the United Way requesting annual funds for the free clinic - something that's done every year. Without that funding, the people who work there lose their jobs and all the people who cannot afford medical care would go without! And she blamed me for not telling her! Uh... make sense? Didn't think so...I handed in my resignation letter the day she told me I didn't need to come back.
Plz! plz! Help! I feel so powerless!? I need help guys! My boss is very unprofessional and has a big mouth. About 2 months ago my ex-boss cut my hours and the receptionists hours from 8 to 3 at first i tried to understand bussiness was slow and he just needed to pick up, he said this would only last for 3 weeks. On Tuesday night my friend (the receptionist) told me my ex boss asked her to ask me for my hours for this pay period because he was going to fire me, he told another processor i wasn't coming back that he was gonna fire me. So Wednesday morning i come in to the office and clock in, and everyone was wondering what is going on. Him and his assistant call me in for a meeting and he says that he had my final check ready because he was gonna let me go and wanted to offer me a deal. Either he fires me and i receive unemployment or he fires me and i receive unemployment but continue to work for him (full time) and get paid on the side $250.00 per file (commissioned), i told him i really had to think about it and he said he needed an answer right then and there, so i told him yes. After talking to my husband that night we agreed that was wrong and not to mention illegal and the only person benefiting from that situation would be him! Because 1. unemployment income i would get regardless because he had already technically fired me 2. he wanted me in the office 8 hrs a day on commission if i didn't close any files then i would get nothing, so basically working for him for free. Thursday morning he comes in and asks me if i called the unemployment office and i said no and that i needed to speak with him. I told him i was turning his offer down and explained to him my reasons and gave him updates on the files. He looked pretty angry and said if i could stay until his files closed i said no that i needed to go out there and look for a job he then asked me for my resignation letter and i told him i wasn't quitting because he had already fired me the day before and i was just turning down his (illegal) commission proposal down . He said "if your just planning on staying home and collecting unemployment then i wont let you go i'll just keep you at 3hrs a day until you quit" I told him he was selfish We left it at that he went out to lunch and i cleaned out my desk and left my time cards on his desk. So this morning i call him and ask him if i can pick up my last check and he says "no, not until payday because you quit i didn't fire you" so what he's trying to do is get out of paying for my unemployment. I dont know what to do now. I called the Labor Commissioner and they said they have to investigate my case, to file a wage complaint and it can take up to a month to begin the process. What happens next? He's gonna stick to his story. . . How do they determine who's right in a he said, she said case? I have nothing in writting! I don't know what to do! i feel so powerless.
I may have been caught at work stealing? Ok, so I work at a service station and whenever friends come in I would not scan everything and give somethings away for free. Now I heard off a friend that knows someone in the company that they know that someone is knocking stuff off at work and that they have it all on tape. They know it was me. I haven't been questioned about it yet. Currently I'm on annual leave. I'm thinking about handing in my resignation letter today. What to do? Do you think they will pursue a court case? I do pretend to scan it each time so I don't know how much they can prove. I myself haven't pocketed anything. It has been items such as drinks, candy bars, phone credit, smokes over a period of possibly a year. Ok, so they called me up and left me a voicemail asking what dates I plan to resign. Don't know if it's a trap or what. Should I just not go back? Or call them work a week then leave?
Quit my job at target? Okay, so I'm contemplating whether I should quit my job at Target now or not. But the thing is I'm planning to quit at the end of January which is when I have to return to school. I would rather focus on my studies at that time so I'm not going to try to get a casual/part-time job after this. I'm planning to just focus on studying. So I'm a casual at Target & I work at the cash registers. I was hired at the start of December & so far I really, really hate the job. My managers are just over all very grumpy people & my co-workers are always so miserable (so am I). I feel very disrespected there as I am also only 15 years old. Everytime I go to work, I dread it so so much. Anyway, it's not that I need the money. I just thought it was a good idea since I have a lot of free time in the holidays. So should I quit now? Because like I've mentioned before, I really hate it there. I dread going so much! Or should I wait until the end of the month when I return to school? I really, really DO want to quit now but I'm afraid I've only been there for such a short period (1 month), that it's just really stupid. Also, how do i quit? Am I suppose to hand in a resignation letter? Or do i just tell my manager & give her like a week notice?

I have worked in this company for 3 years. 2 weeks back on Monday i told than i want to resign as i got another offer they agreed to this and on final day of releasing me my HR and manager convinced me to not to leave company. I said for at least 1 year and i wrote a e-mail to them regarding this. this is all happened on Thursday. Now again i got another offer that is much better than anything else so i again want to resign after 1 week of all this happen. Visa cancelled but boss still requires me to go to work...need help? Here in Dubai, I am working for a small LLC company. Because of the work hour requirements of the job, I had no choice but to quit. I only lasted for almost a year. And I dont know if this helps, but I paid half of my visa expenses through deferred payments deducted on my salary. I passed my resignation letter stating that my last day will be on Jan31 next year. I might be going to New Zealand through a sponsorship sent by relatives. Today, my boss told me that he will cancel my visa on January 15th and he told me that I will still go to work until January 31st even though my visa is already cancelled by then. I am really reluctant to do that because I am planning to spend a couple of weeks with my friends here in Dubai. I wanted to make up for the numerous times I missed their get-together invitations, parties. And I know that as shallow as it sounds, but this is kind of important to me especially that my job requires me to go to work on a 12-hour shift (that sometimes stretches to 13-14 hours) EVERY SINGLE DAY! My question is can I refuse my employer to work after my visa is cancelled? Because if I am not mistaken, once an employer cancels his employee's visa, he is freeing him from the job, that his employee is not allowed to go to work anymore (legal-wise). I need some insight here. Thanks to all who will give advice.
Do you remember Watergate? Do you remember Watergate? Thirty-five years ago this Sunday, U.S. President Richard M. Nixon submitted his letter of resignation for his role in the scandal. There was the crime – the break-in, and then there was the cover-up by the Nixon administration. The Northeast Intelligence Network and Canada Free Press are in possession of extremely sensitive investigative documents, including a stunning written admission by a nationally known talk show host stating that he was threatened with his career – or worse - should he talk about the issue of Barack Hussein Obama’s birth records to a national audience. This document was obtained on December 10, 2008, and provides explicit detail of a “gag order” imposed on this host before and immediately following the national election last November. Douglas J. Hagmann opened a full scale investigation into the media blackout, with specific emphasis on tracing the blackout origins to those issuing them. This investigation was conducted in conjunction with Judi McLeod, founding editor of Canada Free Press and Brian Thompson, CFP Information Technology chief following a meeting near Toronto, Ontario last December. At that meeting, it was decided to keep the existence of the document secret until additional evidence could be obtained. Today, after an extensive eight month investigation, the Northeast Intelligence Network and Canada Free Press are breaking their silence and revealing explosive information about a widespread cover-up that began at the earliest stages of the Obama presidential campaign. The cover-up traces back to some of the most powerful and influential people in the U.S. and continues today. http://canadafreepress.com/index.php/article/13373 What do you think? Read the damn words, the document has been withheld since December and has been investigated since then. Well Brown950 neither is factcheck.org or snopes due to snopes relying on the internet for investigation and Factcheck being part of the Annenberg foundation. This report is from Investigators, not puppets. I understand your point 100% American, considering the person that surrendered the latest 'BC' is in fear of his life and Taitz is in Israel says something to me also.

I want to quit my job, but I work for my parents...? I live at home with my siblings and my parents. I worked at this place for a year before my parents bought it, and have been there for 2-3 years since. I used to love my job and looked forward to going everyday. Over the past couple years, my optimism has steadily decreased to the point where I dread going. Also, my hours have been cut down but am still expected to go there a couple times a week when I'm not scheduled and basically work for free because it's my "duty". My whole family works there now, and I'm afraid to quit because I'll feel out of the loop and I don't want to upset them. Basically I'm just looking for some advice. Should I quit? Has anyone been in this situation? Should I use a letter of resignation? If I do, should I address it to Mom or Mrs._______? I do not have another job but I am searching. So far no luck.

In our towns we should make the streets narrower, crowd more people into the houses, and court the return of the plague. is this a good letter from Sheriff Arpaio's letter to Al Sharpton? Sheriff Arpaio's letter to Al Sharpton Maricopa County Sheriff's Office ^ | April 13, 2009 | Sheriff Joe Arpaio Reverend Al Sharpton 106 West 145th Street Harlem, New York City , New York 10039 Fax: 212 690 3070 Dear Reverend Sharpton: I have read about you with much interest since learning of the protest you plan to lead against me in Maricopa County in June as a way to force my resignation or removal from office. Your public proclamation leads me to the conclusion: not only do you not understand Arizona ; you also do not understand democracy. As the elected Sheriff who, so far has been elected to five consecutive four-year terms, I answer to the four million residents of Maricopa County . I do not answer to the whims of the media, or locally and nationally elected officials who want open borders and who have their own agendas. Nor do I answer to a publicity hound outside interloper who has demonstrated no interest in looking for the truth before making loud uninformed noises. While your public outcries are colorful, there are several instances where you have inserted yourself into other people's affairs without knowing any of the facts. Poor judgment has caused you plenty of trouble in the past and promises to do so again. Most earnest people want to learn by their mistakes. You seem to glory in repeating them. I would like to help you avoid further embarrassment by assisting in your understanding of the illegal immigration problem here in my county. When and if you do make the trip here, I invite you to call me to talk about these false allegations. We can discuss how my deputies are extensively trained by the federal government to properly combat illegal immigration and how the laws of this state allow this Sheriff's Office to question and investigate the immigration status of those people deputies detain in the course of our everyday law enforcement duties. Don't make the same mistake made by the four Democratic Congressmen calling for a U.S. Department of Justice investigation of this office. They and other politicians relied solely on media reports and anti-law enforcement handouts that are replete with inaccuracies. They have brainwashed a handful of local residents to believe these lies. Rest assured that the men and women of the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office do not racially profile anyone. However, we do enforce the state and federal illegal immigration laws. And we will continue to do so as long as these laws are on the books. You can parachute into town, stomp your feet up and down and hold more press conferences against me -- that is a hallmark of democracy too -- but you will not stop me, nor slow me down for one second, from doing what is right. Before you bring your circus to town and take to our streets by marching against this Sheriff, let's get you fully informed for a change. Congressman John Conyers did not have the courtesy to respond to my invitation to visit with me personally. I hope you will consider my invitation. Surely, a man like yourself -- a reverend -- who famously preaches from the church pulpit understands the infinite wisdome of these words: You shall know the truth and the truth will set you free. Let's talk about the truth, Reverend. I await your response. Sincerely, (signature) Joe Arpaio Sheriff, Maricopa County

Would You Reaffirm Your Allegiance? The following article appeared in The Post as an anonymous letter to the editor on July 4, 1976. --- What am I? I am a free man -- a good and decent man -- a man of compassion, generosity, and understanding -- a true friend, a steadfast ally, and a bitter foe. I owe my allegiance to a government founded in the belief that among the rights of man are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Indeed, I would acknowledge no other. I can redress my government for injury; not satisfied with redress, I can elect a new one. I have watched my government function smoothly during periods of transfer of power caused by re-election, assassination, and resignation. While other nations have a distinct race, religion, and/or geographic denominator, I live among people of my home without fear of intrusion by anyone -- citizen or government designee -- unless they have my personal invitation or a duly authorized search warrant. I have a press to keep me informed -- a press free to write, without inhibition, the truth as they see it. A press that needs fear no repression, no retaliation, no censorship so long as it prints the truth. I live under a system of justice, merciful and fairly administered, where I am assumed innocent until proven guilty -- a system which provides me appellate privilege while denying it to the power of the state. I am free to go anywhere I want, earn my living in any way that suits me and, based on that freedom, I have created a standard of living unequalled in the history of man and envied the world over. I have suffered in humility at the consequences of my mistakes -- economic deprivation, social injustice, unequal opportunity and racial prejudice to name a few -- but, once aware of these mistakes, I have set out to right the wrongs they created. I have faced challenges to my way of life. I have fought and died countless times from Lexington and Concord to Vietnam. I was humbled at Valley Forge, Pearl Harbor, Corregidor and Malmady. But these experiences gave me the character I needed to go to Yorktown, Gettysburg, Midway and Normandy. I cherish my freedom above all else -- I bow to no tyrant. I am two hundred years old today. I have never been so proud of my ancient heritage, so grateful for my present situation, and so confident of the future. Today, I reaffirm my allegiance to, faith in, and love of my country. To the proposition that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth, I do humbly pledge my life, my fortune, and my sacred honor. I am an American. Bob - GOD BLESS AMERICA... AL - Try saying that in Mexico... THANKS TO ALL YOU VETS, GOD BLESS...

Poll: Where do you come down on Global Warming - Chamber of Commerce (who knows it's a scam) or the "greens"? Climate Bill Backers Quit Chamber of Commerce By Amanda DeBard The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the nation's largest business trade association, has suffered the defection of five of its members, including Apple Inc. and Nike Inc., over its hard-line opposition to pending climate change legislation. The resignations, submitted in just the past two weeks, have shined a spotlight on the deep divisions in industry over how to deal with the issue of climate change. The chamber is leading the charge against President Obama's effort to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere. But three utilities, along with business powerhouses Nike and Apple, support the climate legislation that passed the House in June. Disagreements are common in large trade associations. But resignations over policy are rare, an indication of how high the stakes are in opposing a top-agenda item of a sitting president. Apple is the latest company to publicly split with the chamber over climate policy. The maker of Macintosh computers and iPhones said Monday that it wishes the chamber would "play a constructive role in addressing the climate crisis" and finds it frustrating to be at odds with the chamber over regulating greenhouse gas emissions, according to a letter to the chamber from Catherine A. Novelli, Apple's vice president of worldwide government affairs. As a result of the chamber's position, Apple said, it would resign its membership effective immediately. In response, the chamber said its position on climate change is misunderstood, explaining that it opposes the pending legislation rather than comprehensive climate policy. "The chamber is a consensus-driven organization and welcomes input from any company that wants to work on a comprehensive approach to reduce greenhouse gases," said Eric Wohlschlegel, a chamber spokesman. "While well continue to represent the broad majority of our membership on this goal, we recognize that there are some companies who stand to gain more than others with the current options on the table." Three major utilities - PG&E Corp. of California, Exelon Corp. of Chicago and PNM Resources of New Mexico - said they also disagree with the chamber's position on its call for a public hearing on the Obama administration's assertion that there is a link between carbon dioxide and public health and welfare. The link, if it exists, would allow the Environmental Protection Agency to regulate all carbon dioxide emitters. The hearing would be the equivalent of a "Scopes monkey trial of the 21st century," Peter Darbee, PG&E's chief executive, said in a blog post last month announcing the split. "The carbon-based free lunch is over," John Rowe, Exelon's chief executive, said last month. Mr. Rowe said the world's climate problem cant be fixed free of charge, but his company supports the legislation because it "will drive low-carbon investments in the most inexpensive and efficient way possible." Exelon, the nation's largest nuclear power generator, could earn more than $1 billion a year in profit if the pending legislation becomes law, Mr. Rowe said. PNM Resources said it objected to calls to put "the science of climate change on trial" and would withdraw from the chamber. The utility had previously informed the chamber that it would allow its members on the chamber's board to lapse. The three utilities are members of the U.S. Climate Action Partnership (USCAP), a group of businesses and environmentalists that supports the pending legislation. The House-passed climate bill was based in part on proposals advocated by USCAP. Nike also quit the chamber's board late last month, but will retain its membership in the group. The global athletic company said it "does not believe that on the issue of climate change the chamber represents the diversity of views held by board members." Separately, Johnson & Johnson, General Electric Co. and the San Jose Chamber of Commerce have said the chamber's position on climate change does not reflect their corporate views, but they have not severed ties with the business group. Pete Altman, climate campaign director for the Natural Resources Defense Council, said the actions of the companies show their frustration with what he called the chamber's "retrograde" position on climate change regulation. "Companies keep proving me wrong, because I think it's hard for them to leave the chamber. It's a big hurdle, because this is just not normally what companies do in order to express opinions," Mr. Altman said. "I have been surprised at how many companies are leaving or publicly criticizing the chamber." He added that the departures were based on a mix of reasons. He noted that some utility companies see the chance to profit from the legislation, while manufacturers desire a climate bill that gives them certainty about the future. In the cases of Nike and Apple, he said, they have made corpor
Moat released 2mths into a 4mnth sentence, knowing that he was dangerous. Do the lunatics control the Asylum? Knowing that Moat was a danger to his ex-girlfriend, the prison authorities let him out after he had served 2 months of a 4 month sentence. If they knew he was dangerous, and they sent a letter to that effect a day after they had released him, why didn't they keep him inside for the rest of his sentence and take proper precautions to protect society? After murder and serious shootings, the bleeding hearts are ready to crucify the police for not preventing his mayhem. If the police are forced into shooting him, these same bleeding hearts will demand sacrifices and resignations from the police, while social workers ( yes, they operate in prison and are supposed to, with the probation service, provide back up and plans for released prisoners) and the prison authorities will get off scot free. Is the system mad to allow this convict out? Has the world gone mad? Your thoughts please. But he hadn't served his sentence. He had served half his sentence, and parole is for those that are deemed to have been rehabilitated, no longer a threat to society, unlikely to reoffend. I don't say keep them in after their sentence, I say keep them in for their full sentence. Knowing he was a danger, the extra 2 months of his sentence would have allowed time for proper preparations to made for his release. The Prison Service, The Probation Service and the Social Service are at fault here. They are responsible for people being killed and shot because they could have made him serve his full sentence and given proper warnings. Sending a letter on the day of Moat's release is not responsible or reasonable. It is an attempt at CYA.

Malachi Ritscher? Malachi Ritscher, 1954-2006 Story by Nitsuh Abebe http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/feature/39663/Malachi_Ritscher_19542006 In December 2002, the city of Chicago dedicated a statue called "The Flame of the Millennium"-- a seven-ton, stainless-steel, abstract rendering of a flame in high wind, standing over the Kennedy Expressway, just west of the downtown Loop. Last Friday, November 3, the statue appeared to be on fire. When authorities got there, they found a video camera, a canister of gasoline, a sign reading "Thou Shalt Not Kill", and a human body so badly charred that it was impossible to determine its sex. Someone had self-immolated, near a highway off-ramp, amid rush-hour traffic. Over the next few days, members of Chicago's avant-garde music community would be shocked to learn that the person who'd done this was one of their own-- someone many of them had been running into, several nights a week, for more than a decade. Tougher still would be dealing with the reasons behind it. According to the statements left on his website, 52-year-old Malachi Ritscher had set himself on fire to protest the war in Iraq and the politics that allowed it to happen. And thus began the same debate, among his friends, among the public, on blogs, and in comment boxes across the internet-- an argument about which of two pigeonholes we'd slot this into: Was it an important act of political protest, or the tragic end of a mentally ill person? Most fans of underground music are probably aware of Chicago's experimental music scene, or at least its most prominent figures: People like jazz saxophonist Ken Vandermark, who won a MacArthur Fellowship in 1999, or the countless players-- Jeb Bishop, Chad Taylor, Fred Lonberg-Holm-- whose names became recognizable to indie fans during the 1990s, in the heyday of Chicago post-rock. If you haven't spent time in Chicago, though, it's easy to underestimate how vibrant the scene is, and has been. Over the past decade, every week in the city has offered multiple opportunities to see avant-garde music, improvised instrumental performances, and free jazz performed by musicians from around the city and around the world, all of it supported by a large and complex circle of artists and fans. Just tracking down who's playing with whom can be a discographer's nightmare: This is a scene that cooperates. And those most involved in that scene knew Malachi Ritscher. For years, he'd been a constant presence in the community, and probably its most committed documentarian: From the late 1980s onward, he spent an incredible number of nights out at shows, recording and photographing the musicians, and spending time with other fans. "According to his website, he recorded approximately 2,000 shows," says Dave Rempis, who plays saxophone in the Vandermark Five. "That would be six years of recording a show every single night. And from being around this scene, I can tell you that's not at all an overestimation. He was constantly at concerts-- I'd see him five nights a week." "The recording was a big deal," says percussionist Michael Zerang, who's also played in a Vandermark-led group. "A lot of us couldn't afford recordings, and he would do it and virtually give it to us for free." Dozens of those recordings wound up becoming official releases, either through the artist's labels, or through Ritcher's own Savage Sound Syndicate. "Whenever I saw him," says Rempis, "he'd have a stack of 10 or 20 CD-Rs in his bag, so he could say, 'Oh yeah, I have something for you.'" For most people, Ritscher's support meant just as much as his recording skills-- especially when it came to music that was so lacking in any kind of broad commercial appeal. "Just by being present all the time," says Zerang, laughing fondly, "well, there was always at least one person there." Bruce Finkelman owns the Empty Bottle-- a key venue for rock and experimental music-- and became used to seeing Ritscher show up for just about all of it: "Twenty below zero temperatures, three people in the club, and Malachi was one of them. Five feet of snow on the ground, and no one showing up, and he was there." It's a level of passion and enthusiasm that should be unimaginable to most of us-- going out, every other night, even in Chicago winters, to see free jazz? All of these people remember Ritscher warmly: He was kind, intelligent, funny, outgoing, polite. And yet there's not much doubt that Ritscher was also, in a lot of ways, alone. He was born Mark David Ritscher, in 1954, in North Dakota; according to the obituary he posted to his own website, he dropped out of high school and married at age 17. He had a son. Ten years later, when his marriage dissolved, Ritscher moved to Chicago and immersed himself in the music scene-- taking his son's name, Malachi, for his own. Music wasn't the only thing he immersed himself in, either: He was an active anti-war activist, an avid photographer, a collector, a reader, and a writer. He painted watercolors, wrote poetry, dabbled with various musical instruments, and grew peppers for his own hot-sauce recipe. One thing he did not seem to do was forge close friendships. He was estranged from his ex-wife, son, and grandchildren. People in Chicago knew him, saw him often, and found him outgoing and friendly-- but that tended to be the extent of it. "I always kind of got the impression that Malachi chose to distance himself a little bit from people," says Rempis. "I don't think he had a regular group of friends who called him up and said 'Do you want to go out on Friday night?' He moved as an individual, mostly. He was to some degree a loner, and I think he would probably describe himself that way-- the ironic part of it being that he knew hundreds of people around town. For me, I don't even know if I had his phone number, but I saw him maybe three nights a week. He knew many, many people who without a doubt would have described him as a friend." Writing his own obituary, Ritscher says much the same: "As a child, he was intensely afraid of many things, especially heights; he spent the rest of his life trying to face his fears, without ever coming to terms with his fear of people....He had many acquaintances, but few friends; and wrote his own obituary, because no one else really knew him." Self-immolation is not a common act, mostly because it's one of the slowest, most painful, and messiest ways a person can kill himself. For most Americans, consciousness of the act comes down to one man, and one photograph: a 1963 shot of a Vietnamese monk named Thích Quảng Đức, seated in the Lotus position in the middle of a Saigon street, consumed by flames, protesting the treatment of Buddhists under a Catholic regime. The few monks who did this didn't consider it suicide, but rather a form of non-violent protest-- a way for pacifists to speak louder than those who kill. (Gandhi, when questioned on the limits of pacifism, had suggested similar thinking.) There's no question that self-immolation is agonizing, and that's precisely why it's been used as a form of protest: It's meant to show an intense commitment to one's cause. Malachi Ritscher is one of fewer than 10 people in American history to have done this. And as of 2006, it's hard to imagine how an American could successfully use self-immolation as a form of protest. You can't tell anyone about it: Most people would try to dissuade you, or even have you committed for your own protection. It's something you'll inevitably do alone; it's something that major media will not widely report; and it's something most people will conclude was the work of a very ill person. Back, then, to the question everyone's asking, the question you probably already have strong opinions on: Was Malachi Ritscher a political martyr or a mentally troubled suicide? Let me tip my editorial hand and claim something: The argument is a distraction, and it's the wrong question to ask. It assumes too much. It assumes that the two things are mutually exclusive, or binaries, and that they can't be jumbled intractably in someone's thinking. It assumes that there's a clear, distinct line between rational politics and personal emotions. And it assumes that a troubled person can't legitimately mean what he says, even if his way of expressing it is tragic. But if there's anything we can learn from Malachi Ritscher, it's that none of these things are that simple. On the one hand-- whether or not he suffered from mental illness, as his son has claimed in the comments box beneath Peter Margasak's Chicago Reader blog post, the first reporting done on Ritscher's death-- it's easy to conclude that he was an isolated person, with a life full of hobbies and passions but not much else. (Forgive me for saying it, but if any of you reading this spend most of your time alone at computers, blogging and posting to message boards but not always doing the tough, tiring work of going out and forging messy human relationships with the people around you, this is something to remember: Try hard.) At 52 years old, going to shows every night, estranged from his son and grandchildren, and without anyone incredibly close to him, how easy would it have been for Ritscher to decide that there wasn't much in the future he'd really miss if he weren't around? On the other hand, Ritscher was intensely politically committed, and had been for years, and the texts on his website explain this as a political act. His acquaintances in the music world insist on doing him the credit of taking that seriously. "On the surface, that's what he said and that's what he did," says Zerang. "I'll take that at face value. It's a very potent message. People raise the specter of mental illness, and, well, okay-- but I don't see how that takes away the power of his message. "In all the years I've known him, I've never perceived him as someone who was mentally ill. That doesn't mean he wasn't, but I never saw it. I look at his action, and these are his reasons, so let's talk about it in those terms." Rempis' understanding is similar. "I think there was a pretty clear debate happening about whether this was an act of depression or whether it was a political act, and either way it's a pretty difficult thing for his friends and family to deal with. It's really tragic. I saw him in the weeks leading up to this, and I talked to two musicians today in New York who he'd sent correspondence to in the past few weeks-- with CDs of shows they'd recently done out here, and friendly, upbeat letters. I think this is something he'd been considering for a very long time, and more of a political act than an act of depression. He was really trying to express something here, and I think it's spelled out pretty clearly on his website." It's the reception of the "Mission Statement" on that website that offers some of the strangest cues. One of the few major-media voices that's addressed it is Richard Roeper, in his column for the Chicago Sun-Times: Quoting heavily from Ritscher's note, he describes the text as intelligent but "bitter" and "disturbed." And in at least one spot, it genuinely is: Ritscher talks about having walked past Donald Rumsfeld one day, with "a knife clenched in my hand," and regrets not having assassinated the Secretary of Defense. Leave alone the sad irony of Rumsfeld's resignation a few days after Ritscher's death, or the question of how Rumsfeld's absence would have changed much about the war: This is frightening and morally confused, the same logic that animates people to gun down reproductive health workers. What's interesting, though, is the rest of it. It's no Unabomber-like rant, or conspiracy tract: For the most part it's thoughtful and relaxed. More importantly, no matter what you think of the views expressed, they're not particularly different from the ones you'll find on any number of leftist, anti-war, third-party, or independent-media websites, blogs, papers, or message boards. Ritscher's feelings about this country and about the war, extreme or not, are ones no small number of people share. And that's important, because there's no reason to believe that politics and mental health don't have anything to do with each other. A person's depression or hopelessness can be exacerbated by any number of events in his personal life: rejection, loneliness, failure. At the same time, that hopelessness can be exacerbated by his experience of politics: The feeling of being alienated, ignored, or powerless to stop injustice. Whether the source is the people around you or the news on the television, the result is the same: You wind up feeling thwarted, frustrated, and weak. And if enough people feel this way, it makes sense that one of them-- possibly one of them with plenty of other issues in his life-- might take the kind of action Ritscher did. It doesn't make him right, or a martyr. It just makes him a piece of very shocking evidence that some of the people around us feel very hurt and marginalized. Most of them, thankfully, have found-- and will find-- much better ways to deal with it. "A lot of us feel like he sort of took a karmic hit for us," says Zerang. "Because so many of us were upset with the way these wars are happening and people are dying-- we do what we can in our own ways, but truly there's a lot of frustration about that. And then he did this and it's almost like he took the hit for us. It's been very interesting to see the responses and how the dialogue has emerged around town. In the last week there've been concerts, a lot of good concerts, so the community has been out in force, and just talking. It's just remarkable how many diverging opinions there are about this." Interpretation of the act might be up in the air, but the one thing just about everyone agrees on is the wish that he hadn't done it. His siblings and parents, proud as they can be of how much he meant to the Chicago music world, or even his final actions, are obviously grieving; his son Malachi, faced with this final estrangement, is obviously hurt. And the musicians around him will certainly feel the loss of someone who'd been a constant presence in their world. The most they can do is try to find something positive in it. "There's nothing I can argue with, apart from the final action he took," says Zerang. "Roeper's last line was something like, 'It's going to be a futile act,' but the jury's out on that, right? Something can come of it, it can resonate with people. And if that happens, it's not a futile act. And the people in the community here in Chicago are talking and looking at things differently-- so right there, it's not a futile act. For better or worse, he changed something." Just as important, there's everything else he left behind. A few days after his death, a package arrived for Bruno Johnson, owner of the free-jazz label Okka Disk: It contained, as reported by the Reader, "[Ritscher's] will, keys to his home, and instructions about what should be done with his belongings." Among his possessions is one legacy: An archive of the Chicago experimental scene stretching back for two decades. And for the musicians, there's another: The memory and invaluable support of at least one enthusiast who, no matter when they were playing, and no matter how few people showed up, was always there to cheer them on.
whats The Real Story Of Mary From the Holy Quran? 1 Kaf. Ha. Ya. `Ain. Sad. This is the only Sura which begins with these five Abbreviated Letters, K.,H.,Y.,A.,S. For Abbreviated Letters generally. 2 (This is) a recital of the Mercy of thy Lord to His Servant Zakariya. The Mercy of Allah to Zakriya was shown in many ways: (1) in the acceptance of his prayer; (2) in bestowing a son like Yahya; and (3) in the love between father and son, in addition to the work which Yahya did as Allah's Messenger for the world. 3 Behold! he cried to his Lord in secret . In secret: because he feared that his own family and relatives were going wrong, and he wanted to keep the lamp of Allah burning bright. He could not very well mention the fear about his colleagues (who were his relations) 4 Praying: "O my Lord! infirm indeed are my bones and the hair of my head doth glisten with grey: but never am I unblest O my Lord in my prayer to Thee! This preface shows the fervent faith of Zakariya. Zakariya was a prophet of the Most High Allah. His office was in the Temple, and his relatives were his colleagues. But he found in them no true spirit of the service of Allah and man. He was filled with anxiety as to who would uphold the godly ideas he had in mind, which were strange to his worldly colleagues. 5 "Now I fear (what) my relatives (and colleagues) (will do) after me: but my wife is barren: so give me an heir as from Thyself His was not merely a desire for a son. If it had been, he would have prayed much earlier in his life, when he was a young man. He was too full of true piety to put merely selfish things into his prayers. But here was a public need, in the service of the Lord. 6 "(One that) will (truly) represent me and represent the posterity of Jacob; and make him O my Lord! one with whom Thou art well-pleased!" It is true that an heir inherits property, but his higher duty is to represent in everything the personality of him from whom he inherits. It is doubtful whether Zakariya had any worldly property. But he had character and virtue, as a man of God, and this he wanted to transmit to his heir as his most precious possession. It was almost the most precious possession of the posterity of Jacob. The people around him had fallen away from Allah's Message. Could his heir, like him, try and renew it? 7 (His prayer was answered): "O Zakariya! We give thee good news of a son: his name shall be Yahya: on none by that name have We conferred distinction before." This was John the Baptist, the forerunner of Jesus. In accordance with his father's prayer he, and Jesus for whom he prepared the way, renewed the Message of Allah, which had been corrupted and lost among the Israelites. The Arabic form Yahya suggests "Life". The Hebrew form is Johanan, which means "Jehovah has been Gracious". 8 He said: "O my Lord! how shall I have a son when my wife is barren and I have grown quite decrepit from old age?" Who is the "He" in this clause? As I have construed it, following the majority of Commentators, it means the angel who brought the message from Allah. But some Commentators construe it to refer to Zakariya. In that case the meaning will be: Zakariya after a little reflection said (in his wonder) "So!", i.e., "Can it really be so? Can I really have a son in my old age?" 9 He said: "So (it will be): thy Lord saith `That is easy for Me: I did indeed create thee before when thou hadst been nothing!' " Every man was nothing just before he was created, i.e., his personality was called into being by Allah. Even if there are material processes in forming the body, in accordance with the laws of nature, the real creative force is the power of Allah. But here there is a subtler meaning. John was the harbinger of Jesus, preparing the way for him; and this sentence also prepares us for the more wonderful birth of Jesus himself, see verse 21 below. Everything is possible with Allah. 10 (Zakariya) said "O my Lord! give me a Sign." "Thy Sign" was the answer "shall be that thou shalt speak to no man for three nights although thou art not dumb." 2464 2465 The "Sign", was in order to convince Zakariya that the Lord's promise was true. 11 So Zakariya came out to his people from his chamber: he told them by signs to celebrate Allah's praises in the morning and in the evening. 12 (To his son came the command): "O Yahya! take hold of the Book with might": and We gave him wisdom even as a youth. Time passes. The son is born. In this section of the Sura the centre of interest is Yahya, and the instruction is now given to him. 'Keep fast hold of Allah's revelation with all your might': for an unbelieving world had either corrupted or neglected it, and Yahya (John the Baptist) was to prepare the way for, Jesus, who was coming to renew and re-interpret it. Hukm, translated Wisdom, implies something more than Wisdom; it is the Wisdom or Judgment that is entitied to judge and command, as in the matter of denouncing sin. 13 And pity (for all creatures) as from Us and purity: he was devout John the Baptist did not live long. He was imprisoned by Herod, the tetrarch (provincial ruler under the Roman Empire), whom he had reproved for his sins, and eventually beheaded at the instigation of the woman with whom Herod was infatuated. But even in his young life, he was granted (1) wisdom by Allah, for he boldly denounced sin; (2) gentle pity and love for all Allah's creatures, for he moved among the humble and lowly, and despised "soft raiment"; and (3) purity of life, for he renounced the world and lived in the wilderness. All his work he did in his youth. These things showed themselves in his conduct, for he was devout, showing love to Allah and to Allah's creatures, and more particularly to his parents (for we are considering that aspect of his life): this was also shown by the fact that he never used violence, from an attitude of arrogance, nor entertained a spirit of rebellion against divine Law. 14 And kind to his parents and he was not overbearing or rebellious. 15 So Peace on him the day he was born the day that he dies and the day that he will be raised up to life (again)! This is spoken as in the life-time of Yahya. Peace and Allah's Blessings, were on him when he was born; they continue when he is about to die an unjust death at the hands of a tyrant; and they will be specially manifest at the Day of Judgment. 16 Relate in the Book (the story of) Mary when she withdrew from her family to a place in the East. the story of Mary. Here the whole theme is different: it is the personal side of the experiences of the worshippers of Allah in relation to their families or environment. To a private eastern chamber, perhaps in the Temple. She went into privacy, from her people and from people in general, for prayer and devotion. It was in this state of purity that the angel appeared to her in the shape of a man. She thought it was a man. She was frightened, and she adjured him not to invade her privacy. 17 She placed a screen (to screen herself) from them: then We sent to her Our angel and he appeared before her as a man in all respects. 18 She said: "I seek refuge from thee to (Allah) Most Gracious: (come not near) if thou dost fear Allah." 19 He said: "Nay I am only a messenger from thy Lord (to announce) to thee the gift of a holy son." Allah had destined her to be the mother of the Prophet Jesus Christ, and now had come the time when this should be announced to her. 20 She said: "How shall I have a son seeing that no man has touched me and I am not unchaste?" 21 He said: "So (it will be): thy Lord saith `That is easy for Me: and (We wish) to appoint him as a Sign unto men and a Mercy from Us': it is a matter (so) decreed." The mission of Jesus is announced in two ways (1) he was to be a Sign to men; his wonderful birth and wonderful life were to turn an ungodly world back to Allah; and (2) his mission was similar to that of all prophets of Allah. But the point here is that the Israelites, to whom Jesus was sent, were a hardened race, for whom the message of Jesus was truly a gospel of Mercy. For anything that Allah wishes to create, He says "Be", and it is . There is no interval between His decree and its accomplishment, except such as He imposes by His decree. Time may be only a projection of our own minds in this world of relativity. 22 So she conceived him and she retired with him to a remote place. The annunciation and the conception, we may suppose, took place in Nazareth (of Galilee), say 65 miles north of Jerusalem. The delivery took place in Bethlehem about 6 miles south of Jerusalem. It was a remote place, not only with reference to the distance of 71 miles, but because in Bethlehem itself the birth was in an obscure corner under a palm-tree, from which perhaps the babe was afterwards removed to a manger in a stable. 23 And the pains of childbirth drove her to the trunk of a palm-tree: she cried (in her anguish): "Ah! would that I had died before this! Would that I had been a thing forgotten and out of sight!" She was but human, and suffered the pangs of an expectant mother, with no one to attend on her. The circumstances being peculiar, she had got far away from her people. 24 But he cried to her from beneath the (palm-free): "Grieve not! for thy Lord hath provided a rivulet beneath thee; 25 "And shake towards thyself the trunk of the palm-tree: it will let fall fresh ripe dates upon thee. Unseen Providence had seen that she should not suffer from thirst or from hunger. The rivulet provided her with water also for ablutions. 26 "So eat and drink and cool (thine) eye. And if thou dost see any man say `I have vowed a fast to (Allah) Most Gracious and this day will I enter into no talk with any human being.' " Cool thine eye: An idiom for "comfort thyself and be glad". The literal meaning should not, however, be lost sight of. She was to cool her eyes (perhaps full of tears) with the fresh water of the rivulet and take comfort that a remarkable babe had been born to her. She was also to look around, and if any one came near, she was to decline all conversation. It was quite true: she was under a vow, and could not talk to any one. She was to decline all conversation with man or woman, on the plea of a vow to Allah. The "fast" here does not mean abstinence literally from eating and drinking. She has just been advised to eat the dates and drink of the stream. It means abstinence from the ordinary household meals, and indeed from human intercourse generally. 27 At length she brought the (babe) to her people carrying him (in her arms). They said: "O Mary! truly an amazing thing hast thou brought! The amazement of the people knew no bounds. In any case they were ready to think the worst of her, as she had disappeared from her kin for some time. But now she comes, shamelessly parading a babe in her arms! How she had disgraced the house of Aaron, the fountain of priesthood! We may suppose that the scene took place in the Temple in Jerusalem, or in Nazareth. 28 "O sister of Aaron! thy father was not a man of evil nor thy mother a woman unchaste!" Aaron the brother of Moses was the first in the line of Israelite priesthood. Mary and her cousin Elisabeth (mother of Yahya) came of a priestly family, and were therefore, "sisters of Aaron" or daughters of 'Imran (who was Aaron's father). See n. 375 to iii. 35. Mary is reminded of her high lineage and the unexceptionable morals of her father and mother. How, they said, she had fallen, and disgraced the name of her progenitors! 29 But she pointed to the babe. They said: "How can we talk to one who is a child in the cradle?" What could Mary do? How could she explain? Would they, in their censorious mood, accept her explanation? All she could do was to point to the child, who, she knew, was no ordinary child. And the child came to her rescue. By a miracle he spoke, defended his mother, and preached-to an unbelieving audience. 30 He said: "I am indeed a servant of Allah: He hath given me revelation and made me a prophet; 31 "And He hath made me Blessed wheresoever I be and hath enjoined on me Prayer and Charity as long as I live; There is a parallelism throughout the accounts of Jesus and Yahya, with some variations. Both the parallelisms and the variations are interesting. For instance Jesus declares at the very outset that he is a servant of Allah, thus negativing the false notion that he was Allah or the son of Allah. The greatness of Yahya is described in terms that are not applied to Jesus, but the verses xix. 14-15 as applied to Yahya are in almost identical terms with those applied to Jesus here. Devotion in Prayer and Charity is a good description of Christ at its best, and pity, purity, and devotion in Yahya are a good description of the ways leading to Prayer and Charity, just as John led to Jesus. 32 "(He) hath made me kind to my mother and not overbearing or miserable; Overbearing violence is not only unjust and harmful to those on whom it is practised; it is perhaps even more harmful to the person who practises it, for his soul becomes turbid, unsettled, and ultimately unhappy and wretched,-the state of those in Hell. Here the negative qualities are "not overbearing or miserable." As applied to John they were "not overbearing or rebellious." John bore his punishment from the State without any protest or drawing back. 33 "So Peace is on me the day I was born the day that I die and the Day that I shall be raised up to life (again)"! and Christ was not crucified. 34 Such (was) Jesus the son of Mary: (it is) a statement of truth about which they (vainly) dispute. The disputations about the nature of Jesus Christ were vain, but also persistent and sanguinary. The modern Christian churches have thrown them into the background, but they would do well to abandon irrational dogmas altogether. 35 It is not befitting to (the majesty of) Allah that He should beget a son. Glory be to Him! When He determines a matter He only says to it "Be" and it is. Begetting a son is a physical act depending on the needs of men's animal nature. Allah Most High is independent of all needs, and it is derogatory to Him to attribute such an act to Him. It is merely a relic of pagan and anthropomorphic materialist superstitions. 36 Verily Allah is my Lord and your Lord: Him therefore serve ye: this is a Way that is straight. As opposed to the crooked superstitions which take refuge in all sorts of metaphysical sophistries to prove three in one and one in three. In the Qur-an there is no crookedness (xviii. 1). Christ's teaching was simple, like his life, but the Christians have made it crooked. 37 But the sects differ among themselves: and woe to the Unbelievers because of the (coming) Judgment of a momentous Day! Judgment: the word in the original is Mash-had, which implies many things: (1) the time or place where evidence is taken, as in a Court of Judgment; (2) the time or place where people are produced (to be judged); and (3) the occasion for such production for the taking of evidence. A very expressive phrase for the Day of Judgment. 38 How plainly will they see and hear the Day that they will appear before Us! But the unjust today are in error manifest! and that whole passage, where the Resurrection is described. 39 But warn them of the Day of Distress when the matter will be determined: for (behold) they are negligent and they do not believe! Hasrat: Sighs, sighing, regrets, distress. 40 It is We Who will inherit the earth and all beings thereon: to Us will they all be returned. Material property passes from one to another: when one dies, another inherits it. Allah gives life and death, and all that survives after physical death goes back to Allah, the original source of all things. 41 Also mention in the Book (the story of) Abraham: he was a man of Truth a prophet. 42 Behold he said to his father: "O my father! why worship that which heareth not and seeth not and can profit thee nothing? The reference to Abraham here is in relation to his tender solicitude for his father, who had not received the light of Unity, and to whom Abraham wanted to be a guide and friend. 43 "O my father! to me hath come knowledge which hath not reached thee: so follow me: I will guide thee to a Way that is even and straight. Some are more receptive of Light than others. It is their duty and privilege to guide and point to the right Way. Sawiyan-right, smooth, even; complete, perfect; hence the derived meaning: in full possession of all the physical senses; in that context, 'not dumb': , when the angel appears in the form of a man, 'completely like' a man, a man 'in all respects.' 44 "O my father! serve not Satan: for Satan is a rebel against (Allah) Most Gracious. The rebellion is all the more heinous and inexcusable, considering that Allah is Most Just, Most Merciful, Most Gracious. 45 "O my father! I fear lest a Penalty afflict thee from (Allah) Most Gracious so that thou become to Satan a friend." To entertain a feeling of friendliness, instead of aversion, to Evil, is in itself a degradation of our nature, a Penalty which Allah imposes on our deliberate rejection of the Truth. And the friendliness to Evil also implies the sharing of the outlawry of Evil. 46 (The father) replied: "Dost thou hate my gods O Abraham? If thou forbear not I will indeed stone thee: now get away from me for a good long while!" Note the gentle persuasive tone of Abraham in his speeches (for we may suppose those sentences to sum up a long course of arguments) and contrasted with the brusque and repellent tone of the father's reply in this verse. The one was the outcome of the true Light which had come to Abraham from Allah, as the other was the outcome of Pagan arrogance and the worship of brute force. The spiritual lesson from this episode of Abraham's life may be stated in four propositions: (1) the pious son is dutiful to his father and wishes him well in all things, material and spiritual, (2) if the father refuses Allah's Light, the son will do his utmost to bring such Light to the father; (3) having received the Light, the son will never renounce that Light, even if he has to forfeit his father's love and renounce his home; (4) even if the father repels him and turns him out, his answer will be a soft answer, full of love and forgiveness on the one hand, but firmness on behalf of Truth on the other. 47 Abraham said: "Peace be on thee: I will pray to my Lord for thy forgiveness: for He is to me Most Gracious. where this promise of Abraham to pray for his father is referred to, and its limitations pointed out. 48 "And I will turn away from you (all) and from those whom ye invoke besides Allah: I will call on my Lord: Perhaps by my prayer to my Lord I shall be not unblest." Abraham left his father and the home of his fathers (Ur of the Chaldees) and never returned. He left because he was turned out, and because it was not possible for him to make any compromise with what was false in religion. In return for abuse, he spoke gentle words. And he expressed his fervent hope that at least he (Abraham) would have Allah's blessing in reply to his prayers. Here was a prefigurement of another Hijrat many centuries later! In both cases the prayer was abundantly fulfilled. 49 When he had turned away from them and from those whom they worshipped besides Allah We bestowed on him Isaac and Jacob and each one of them We made a prophet. Isaac and Isaac's son Jacob are mentioned here as carrying on one line of Abraham's traditions. The other line was carried on by Isma'il, who is mentioned independently five verses lower down, as his line got special honour in the Holy Prophet of Islam. That is why his mention comes after that of Moses. 50 And We bestowed of Our Mercy on them and We granted them lofty honor on the tongue of truth. Abraham and his son and grandson Isaac and Jacob, and their line, maintained the banner of Allah's truth for many generations, and they won deservedly high praise-the praise of truth-on the tongues of men. Abraham prayed that he should be praised by the tongue of truth among men to come in later ages: xxvi. 84. Ordinary praise may mean nothing: it may be due to selfish flattery on the part of others or artful management by the person praised. Praise on the tongue of sincere truth is praise indeed! 51 Also mention in the Book (the story of) Moses: for he was specially chosen and he was an apostle (and) a prophet. Moses was (1) especially chosen, and therefore prepared and instructed in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, in order that he might free his people from Egyptian bondage; there may also be a reference to Moses's title of Kalimullah, the one to whom Allah spoke without th eintervention of angels (2) he was a prophet (nabi), in that he received inspiration; and (3) he was a messenger (rasul) in that he had a Book of Revelation, and an Ummat or organised Community, for which he instituted laws. 52 And We called him from the right side of Mount (Sinai) and made him draw near to Us for mystic (converse). The incident here I think refers to the incidents described more fully . The time is when Moses (with his family) was travelling and grazing the flocks of his father-in-law Jethro, just before he got his commission from Allah. The place is somewhere near Mount Sinai (Jabal Musa). Moses sees a Fire in the distance, but when he goes there, he hears a voice that tells him it is sacred ground. Allah asked him to put off his shoes and to draw near, and when he went near, great mysteries were revealed to him. He was given his commission, and his brother Aaron was given to him to go with him and aid him. It is after that, that he and Aaron went and faced Pharaoh in Egypt. The right side of the mountain may mean that Moses heard the voice from the right side of the mountain as he faced it; or it may have the figurative meaning of "right" in Arabic, i.e., the side which was blessed or sacred ground. 53 And out of Our Mercy We gave him his brother Aaron (also) a prophet. Moses was diffident, and reluctant to go to Pharaoh as he had an impediment in his tongue, and he asked that his brother Aaron should be associated with him in his mission. Allah in His Mercy granted his request. 54 Also mention in the Book (the story of) Ismail: He was (strictly) true to what he promised and he was an apostle (and) a prophet. Isma'il was Az-zabih i.e., the chosen sacrifice for Allah in Muslim tradition. When Abraham told him of the sacrifice, he voluntarily offered himself for it, and never flinched from his promise, until the sacrifice was redeemed by the substitution of a ram under Allah's commands. He was the fountain-head of the Arabian Ummat, and in his posterity came the Prophet of Allah. The Ummat and the Book of Islam reflect back the prophethood on Isma'il. 55 He used to enjoin on his people Prayer and Charity and he was most acceptable in the sight of his Lord. 56 Also mention in the Book the case of Idris: he was a man of truth (and sincerity) (and) a prophet: Idris is mentioned twice in the Qur-an, where he is mentioned among those who patiently persevered., that he was taken up without passing through the portals of death. All we are told is that he was a man of truth and sincerity, and a prophet, and that he had a high position among his people. It is this point which brings him in the series of men just mentioned; he kept himself in touch with his people, and was honoured among them. Spiritual progress need not cut us off from our people, for we have to help and guide them. He kept to truth and piety in the highest station. 57 And We raised him to a lofty station. 58 Those were some of the prophets on whom Allah did bestow His Grace of the posterity of Adam and of those whom We carried (in the Ark) with Noah and of the posterity of Abraham and Israel of those whom We guided and chose; whenever the Signs of (Allah) Most Gracious were rehearsed to them they would fall down in prostrate adoration and in tears. The earlier generations are grouped into three epochs from a religious point of view: (1) from Adam to Noah, (2) from Noah to Abraham, and (3) from Abraham to an indefinite time, say to the time when the Message of Allah was corrupted and the need arose for the final Messenger of Unity and Truth. Israel is another name for Jacob. The original is in the Aorist tense, implying that the "Posterity" alluded to includes not only the messengers but their worthy followers who are true to Allah and uphold His standard. 59 But after them there followed a posterity who missed prayers and followed after lusts: soon then will they face Destruction This selfish godless posterity gains the upper hand at certain times, but even then there is always a minority who see the error of their ways, repent and believe, and live righteous lives. They are not penalised in the Hereafter because they were associated with the ungodly in time. They reap the full reward of their faith and righteousness. 60 Except those who repent and believe and work righteousness: for these will enter the Garden and will not be wronged in the least 61 Gardens of Eternity those which (Allah) Most Gracious has promised to His servants in the Unseen: for His promise must (necessarily) come to pass. 62 They will not there hear any vain discourse but only salutations of peace: and they will have therein their sustenance morning and evening. Salam, translated "Peace", has a much wider signification. It includes (1) a sense of security and permanence, which is unknown in this life; (2) soundness, freedom from defects, perfection as in the word salim; (3) preservation, salvation, deliverance, as in the word sallama, (4) salutation, accord with those around us; (5) resignation, in the sense that we are satisfied and not discontented; besides (6) the ordinary meaning of Peace, i.e., freedom from any jarring element. All these shades of meaning are implied in the word Islam. (19.62) Rizq: literally sustenance or means of subsistence, the term covers all the means of perfect satisfaction of body and soul. Morning and evening, i.e., early and late, all the time, always. (19.62) 63 Such is the Garden which We give as an inheritance to those of Our Servants who guard against evil. 64 (The angels say:) "We descend not but by command of thy Lord: to Him belongeth what is before us and what is behind us and what is between: and thy Lord never doth forget" We are apt to be impatient of the evils we see around us. We may give of our best service to Allah, and yet see no results. In our human short-sightedness we may complain within ourselves. But we must not be impatient. The angels of Grace come not haphazard, but by command of Allah according to His Universal Will and Purpose. Allah does not forget. If things are delayed, it is in accordance with a wise providence, which cares for all. Our plain duty is to be patient and constant in His service. (19.64) 65 "Lord of the heavens and of the earth and of all that is between them: so worship Him and be constant and patient in His worship: knowest thou of any who is worthy of the same Name as He?" The more we taste of the truth and mystery of life, the more do we realise that there is no one to be mentioned in the same breath as Allah. He is above all names. But when we think of His beautiful qualities, and picture them to ourselves by names which give us some idea of Him, we can search the whole wide world of our imagination, and we shall not find another to be compared with Him in name or quality. He is the One: praise be to Him! (19.65) 66 Man says: "What! when I am dead shall I then be raised up alive?" 67 But does not man call to mind that We created him before out of nothing? 68 So by thy Lord without doubt We shall gather them together and (also) the Evil Ones (with them); then shall We bring them forth on their knees round about Hell; The disbelief in a future life is not merely a philosophic doubt, but a warped will, a disingenuous obstinacy in face of our inner spiritual instincts and experiences. We were nothing before. Cannot the same Allah, Who created us out of nothing also continue our personality? But if we refuse to accept His light and guidance, our state will grow worse and worse. We shall be deprived of His grace. We shall be herded with satans. In utter humiliation we shall be faced with all the consequences of our refusal of Truth. (19.68) Round about Hell: There are many ways leading to evil, and people get to it from all round. Hence the mention of the seven Gates to Hell: see xv. 44. and n. 1977. (19.68) 69 Then shall We certainly drag out from every sect all those who were worst in obstinate rebellion against (Allah) Most Gracious. 70 And certainly We know best those who are most worthy of being burned therein. 71 Not one of you but will pass over it: this is with thy Lord a Decree which must be accomplished. Three interpretations are possible, (1) The general interpretation is that every person must pass through or by or over the Fire. Those who have had Taqwa (see. n. 26 to ii. 2) will be saved by Allah's Mercy, while unrepentant sinners will suffer the torments in ignominy, (2) If we refer the pronoun "you" to those "in obstinate rebellion" in verse 69 above, both leaders and followers in sin, this verse only applies to the wicked, (3) Some refer this verse to the Bridge over Hell, the Bridge Sirat, over which all must pass to their final Destiny. This Bridge is not mentioned in the Qur-an. (19.71) 72 But We shall save those who guarded against evil and We shall leave the wrongdoers therein (humbled) to their knees. 73 When Our Clear Signs are rehearsed to them the Unbelievers say to those who believe "Which of the two sides is best in point of position? Which makes the best show in council?" The Unbelievers may, for a time, make a better show in worldly position, or in people's assemblages where things are judged by the counting of heads. But Truth must prevail even in this world, and ultimately the positions must be reversed. (19.73) 74 But how many (countless) generations before them have We destroyed who were even better in equipment and in glitter to the eye? 75 Say: "If any men go astray (Allah) Most Gracious extends (the rope) to them. Until when they see the warning of Allah (being fulfilled) either in punishment or in (the approach of) the Hour they will at length realize who is worst in position and (who) weakest in forces! Allah's warning is that every evil deed must have its punishment, and that there will be a Hereafter, the Day of Judgment, or the Hour, as it is frequently called. The punishment of evil often begins in this very life. For instance, over-indulgence and excesses of all kinds bring on their Nemesis quite soon in this very life. But some subtler forms of selfishness and sin will be punished as every evil will be punished-in its own good time, as the Hour approaches. In either case, the arrogant boasting sinners will realise that their taunt-who is best in position and in forces? (xix. 73)-is turned against themselves. (19.75) 76 "And Allah doth advance in guidance those who seek guidance; and the things that endure. Good Deeds are best in the sight of thy Lord as rewards and best in respect of (their) eventual returns." These lines are the same as in xviii. 46 (second clause), (where see n. 2387), except that the word maradd (eventual returns) is here substituted for amal (hope). The meaning is practically the same: but "hope" is more appropriate in the passage dealing generally with this world's goods, and "eventual returns" in the passage dealing with the sinner's specific investments and commitments in worldly position and organised cliques. (19.76) 77 Hast thou then seen the (sort of) man who rejects Our Signs yet says: "I shall certainly be given wealth and children"? Besides the man who boasts of wealth and power in actual possession, there is a type of man who boasts of getting them in the future and builds his worldly hopes thereon. Is he sure? He denies Allah, and His goodness and Mercy. But all good is in the hands of Allah. Can such a man then bind Allah to bless him when he rejects faith in Allah? Or does he pretend that he has penetrated to the mysteries of the future? For no man can tell what the future holds for him. (19.77) 78 Has he penetrated to the Unseen or has he taken a contract with (Allah) Most Gracious? 79 Nay! We shall record what he says and We Shall add and add to his punishment. Such a man deserves double punishment,-for rejecting Allah, and for his blasphemies with His holy name. (19.79) 80 To Us shall return all that he talks of and he shall appear before Us bare and alone. Literally, "We shall inherit", Cf. xix. 40 and n. 2492. Even if the man had property and power, it must go back to the Source of all things, and the man must appear before the Judgment-seat, alone and unaccompanied, stripped of all the things from which he expected so much! (19.80) 81 And they have taken (for worship) gods other than Allah to give them power and glory! 2525 'Izz=exalted rank, glory, power, might, the ability to impose one's will or to carry out one's will. (19.81) 82 Instead they shall reject their worship and become adversaries against them. Cf. x. 28-30, where the idols deny that they knew anything of their worship, and leave their worshippers in the lurch; and v. 119, where Jesus denies that he asked for worship, and leaves his false worshippers to the punishment of Allah. (19.82) 83 Seest thou not that We have set the Evil Ones on against the Unbelievers to incite them with fury? Under the laws instituted by Allah, when evil reaches a certain stage of rebellion and defiance, it is left to gather momentum and to rush with fury to its own destruction. It is given a certain amount of respite, as a last chance: but failing repentance, its days are numbered. The godly therefore should not worry themselves over the apparent worldly success of evil, but should get on with their own duties in a spirit of trust in Allah. (19.83) 84 So make no haste against them for We but count out to them a (limited) number (of days). 85 The day We shall gather the righteous to (Allah) Most Gracious like a band presented before a king for honors. 86 And We shall drive the sinners to Hell like thirsty cattle driven down to water Note the contrast between the saved and the doomed. The one march with dignity like honoured ones before a king, and the other rush in anguish to their punishment like a herd of cattle driven down by thirst to their watering place. Note the metaphor of the water. They rush madly for water but are plunged into the Fire! (19.86) 87 None shall have the power of intercession but such a one as has received permission (or promise) from (Allah) Most Gracious. 88 They say: "(Allah) Most Gracious has begotten a son!" 89 Indeed ye have put forth a thing most monstrous! The belief in Allah begetting a son is not a question merely of words or of speculative thought. It is a stupendous blasphemy against Allah. It lowers Allah to the level of an animal. If combined with the doctrine of vicarious atonement, it amounts to a negation of Allah's justice and man's personal responsibility. It is destructive of all moral and spiritual order, and is condemned in the strongest possible terms. (19.89) 90 At if the skies are ready to burst the earth to split asunder and the mountains to fall down in utter ruin. 91 That they should invoke a son for (Allah) Most Gracious. 92 For it is not consonant with the majesty of (Allah) Most Gracious that He should beget a son. This basic principle was laid down early in the argument (xix. 35). It was illustrated by a reference to the personal history of many messengers, including Jesus himself, who behaved justly as men to their kith and kin and humbly served Allah. The evil results of such superstitions were pointed out in the case of many previous generations which went to their ruin by dishonouring Allah. And the argument is now rounded off towards the close of the Sura. (19.92) 93 Not one of the beings in the heavens and the earth but must come to (Allah) Most Gracious as a servant. 94 He does take and account of them (all) and hath numbered them (all) exactly. Allah has no sons or favourites or parasites, such as we associate with human beings. On the other hand every creature of His gets His love, and His cherishing care. Everyone of them, however humble, is individually marked before His Throne of Justice and Mercy, and will stand before Him on his own deserts. (19.94) 95 And every one of them will come to him singly on the Day of Judgment. 96 On those who believe and work deeds of righteousness will (Allah) Most Gracious bestow Love. His own love, and the love of man's fellow-creatures, in this world and in the Hereafter. Goodness breeds love and peace, and sin breeds hatred and contention. (19.96) 97 So have We made the (Qur'an) easy in thine own tongue that with it thou mayest give Glad Tidings to the righteous and warnings to people given to contention. 98 But how many (countless) generation before them have We destroyed? Canst thou find a single one of them (now) or hear (so much as) a whisper of them?
